Exploring the Stone Carving Tradition in India

The stone carving tradition in India is one of the world's richest and most deeply rooted traditions. Stonemasons and stone carvers have existed since the 7th century BC. Today, it continues to be passed down from generation to generation as a craft inherited from father to son.

The classical stone carving tradition could, of course, not be considered separate from architecture. All of India's major temples, such as Puri, Konark, Khajuraho, the Kailash Temple, or the Shore Temple in Mahabalipuram, are proof of the richness of the Indian stone carving tradition.

Geologically, the ancient land of Rajasthan is quite rich in various hard rocks such as granites, marbles, quartzites, slates, and other metamorphic rocks, which has turned it into a veritable paradise for stone carvers. Since the Middle Ages, the availability of high-quality stone has naturally paved the way for local people to build beautiful castles, palaces, and temples.

Over time, the high-quality marble and sandstone extracted from the countless quarries in the state have given rise to the tradition of stonemasonry and the art of sculpture. 

This magnificent tradition excited us so much that we immediately started working. Each of the stones we used in the Ancient Hands Collection was shaped by the hands of Indian artisans with centuries of accumulated knowledge and labor.
